Concrete is a fundamental material in civil, architectural and building construction; however, its conventional production does not correspond to sustainable development. Today, dispensing with its use is complex due to the requirements of regulations, codes and construction techniques, which are based on its almost exclusive use as well as its successful application. Therefore, it is necessary to study alternative concretes that are more environmentally friendly based on proposals that allow their application. The objectives of this research are: to characterize the properties of recycled aggregates from demolition waste (pavements), to analyze their current technical and economic feasibility, and to verify the basic mechanical behavior of a recycled structural concrete (HER) containing them. The results indicate that recycled aggregates from pavements are lighter, more porous and more absorbent than natural aggregates (more pronounced in fine aggregates). Despite this decrease in the quality of their properties, they can be considered as an acceptable option for use as aggregate for structural concrete (low strength losses with contents of up to 60%).

A pesar de las propiedades de durabilidad, entre las propiedades importantes de los áridos gruesos a tener en cuenta se incluyen la resistencia, la rigidez, el potencial de adherencia y la absorción. Debe tenerse precaución cuando se utilicen áridos gruesos extremadamente rígidos, como la diabasa o el granito. Dependiendo de las propiedades deseadas del hormigón, los áridos rígidos pueden ser beneficiosos o perjudiciales. Varios estudios han descubierto que el uso de áridos gruesos con mayor rigidez puede aumentar el módulo elástico y, al mismo tiempo, disminuir la capacidad resistente.
